The Netherlands continues strong partnership
with Beijing Design Week in 2016
The key goal of these various initiatives is to explore a more holistic approach to design, connecting important issues such as quality of life and human needs. The Netherlands attaches great importance to creativity and innovation in general and to the creative industries in particular. It is therefore also our goal to foster more collaboration with China in this field by means of solid partnerships.

Covering the issues from housing to urban infrastructure, from historic preservation to local economy, urban renewal is a long term challenge to Beijing. On the one hand, urban renewal is relevant to the individuals’ daily life; and on the other hand, it is a topic on sustainable development of city as a whole. Taking an example of Dongsi North Historic Conservation District, Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) set up a joint studio of master students, which discussed the issues on urban renewal in Beijing’s old city via “research by design”. The design results are present in multi-media and by public participation.

旧 城更新是北京面临的长久挑战：从住房改善到基础设施，从历史保护到产业发展，一方面关乎普通人日常生活，另一方面影响城市整体可持续发展。以东四三条至八 条历史街区为例，北京工业大学与荷兰代尔夫特理工大学合作，通过以“设计研究”（Research by Design）为手段的研究生联合城市设计课程，探索解决北京旧城更新问题的有效途径。设计研究成果将以“多媒体+公众参与”的方式进行展示。
