Staccato of Place and Project, by Maurice Harteveld (2011)

The below text fragments are an associative retrospective in a staccato of place and project, collected for the departing Clemens Steenbergen, professor of Landscape Architecture (1973-2009). It is a pleasure to think back to the subsequent work we did together and thereby sharing responsibilities for the graduate programme on Urbanism.

2008-2009

.
Related to the educational renewal
of the MSc Urbanism:

“Ladies and Gentlemen Students […] This is the greatest adventure that, in my opinion, can only be lived by those who, when choosing their studies, feel enthralled by the never-ending confrontation with the wonder of the total space in which everything is and becomes. ”
prof ir Jacob Berend (Jaap) Bakema (1914-1981), architect of the burnt-out faculty building at Berlageweg 1, in 1964 when he was appointed as extraordinary professor.

.
Related to fate and
necessity of relocation:

“The poor state of the government’s finances meant that the foundation of new buildings for the university could not be considered in the past year and that the completion of the building for chemistry was not taken …”
prof ir Gerardus Diehl (1882-1938), rector and professor of architecture, in 1935 during the construction of the building at Julianalaan 134, the new home for the faculty.
.

.
Related to the new track
MSc Landscape Architecture,
developed on old paths:

“If the future engineer wants to be able to fully understand the processes that are required to obtain the so important products from the plant kingdom, then he must be given the opportunity to study the crops that are the starting point for this, as they are offered to technology, as is in most cases in the living state… ”
prof dr ir Gerrit van Iterson Jr. (1878-1972) founder of the Laboratory for Technical Botany, in 1908 about the need for a culture garden, which will be the TU Delft Botanical Garden, facing the Julianalaan 134.

presented in: Landscape Architecture at TU Delft 1973-2011, Ter Gelegenheid Afscheid prof dr Clemens Steenbergen, Delft: Landscape Architecture, pp. 68-69

Landscape Architecture has been a part of the faculty’s curriculum since the 1940s when Jan Bijhouwer filled a lectureship. This was later expanded and formalised as a specialisation within the Faculty of Architecture, led for nearly 20 years by Frans Maas as full professor. In the late 20th and early 21st century, the chair of Landscape Architecture made great strides under the leadership of Clemens Steenbergen. The group published several internationally recognised books on the fundamentals of the profession. This work finally led to the decision of the Delft University of Technology to offer a full Master degree programme on Landscape Architecture. This programme started in September 2010, shortly after the retirement of Steenbergen.
